News Item: Pierce Digital Round-up

PIERCE ENEWS ISSUE 10

As the Conservative and Liberal Democrats get to grips with
their coalition and the job in hand, we can now hopefully look
forward to some clear direction and vision over the next 12
months and beyond.

There is no doubt there is a huge job to be done but I sense the freshness of a new
government will breed energy and confidence.

This is crucially important as we move tentatively out of the downturn. Trading conditions remain difficult and the prospect of a 'double dip' recession is still a significant threat.

The traditional entrepreneurial zeal of North West businesses means they are right to be cautiously confident while recognising the challenges ahead, and we look forward to working with them towards a full, sustainable recovery.

The Dealmakers

It’s been an interesting time for Pierce as well. Our corporate finance arm, Pierce Corporate Finance Ltd, picked up the Turnaround Team of the Year prize at the Northwest Business Insider Dealmaker awards in March. Tim Mills also won the Young Dealmaker of the Year award, with our esteemed chairman, Graham Boyes, lifting the Personality of the Year award.

Our corporate financiers, John Green and Tim Mills, also took part in an interesting debate at Mahindra Maini Lawyers in Manchester on selling a business. With Entrepreneur’s Relief extended to £2million, there are still favorable conditions for business sales. However, funding issues still remain and such issues were discussed at length during the debate.

Forensic boost

Wearing his forensic hat, John Green has also received the brand new Forensic Accountant and Expert Witness Accreditation from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. With only around 30 specialists registered with the Accreditation nationwide, John joins an exclusive club and further cements Pierce’s position as a true expert in forensic accounting and expert witness work.

Walking tall

On the charity front, Adrienne Groom, a tax senior at Pierce, took part in the recent Manchester Shine Walk, completing the walk in just over seven hours and raising much needed funds for Cancer Research.

A warm tale

A particularly nice story of late was our appointment to act on behalf of longstanding clients, Iain and Jackie Garside, in relation to the Wordsworth Hotel in Grasmere, which they purchased in 2009. Iain and our chairman, Graham Boyes, were at junior school together, a relationship which spans over 50 years.

What interests me about this story is that it again highlights another long-term successful Pierce relationship. As we slowly move into a new era, it’s fair to say the economic landscape is changing once again. However, relationships in business will always remain crucial and through our personal approach, Pierce will be helping our clients through many more business life cycles.
