Thursday 8th October 2015 (registration from 10:00am)

A new Community Interest Company designed to further the objectives of the original Hive business leaders’ network, and ensure that all businesses within the borough, large and small, have the opportunity to play their part.

Any businesses wishing to register their interest in attending the Hive event on Thursday, October 8 can do so via the Hive website here http://bit.ly/1KcMeP5

With the help of Hive, business is buzzing in the borough.

Hive Event

New investors are in town too and we’re delighted to confirm that our keynote speaker at the launch will be Creative Director and fashion designer Patrick Grant.

A passion for clothing, craftsmanship and British brands led Patrick to Savile Row tailors Norton & Sons which he took over in 2005.

In 2009 Patrick re-launched the historic British sporting and military tailoring house of E. Tautz.

In 2013 he launched Hammond & Co in the UK in partnership with Debenhams.

In 2015, Patrick took the helm at Blackburn-based Cookson and Clegg.

As a borough with a proud textile and manufacturing heritage, C&C have been producing clothing in Blackburn since 1860 making them one of the longest serving UK clothing manufacturers.

Patrick is a regular on the BBC both on television and radio, including the major documentaries Savile Row, Harris Tweed, and The Perfect Suit, and the on-going BBC2 Series The Great British Sewing Bee.

To register your interest in attending, please contact us here. Don’t forget to join the Hive network too if you’re not already a member.

About HIVE

Hive was first launched in 2012 with the aim of turning Blackburn with Darwen into a world-class business area.

Since then, 250 local organisations from micro to multinational have pledged their support; we’ve had recognition of Hive’s role in improving the local business environment (Enterprising Britain Awards, 2014); we’ve hosted leading figures from within industry and we’ve celebrated the very best of business via the inaugural Hive Business Awards.

Despite a new CiC structure, the aims of Hive remain the same and are underpinned by the town’s famous motto of arte at labore – by skill and hard work.

With a proud history of manufacturing and making, we want to continue to raise the profile of Blackburn with Darwen, locally and across the wider UK, as a great place to do business; we want to attract more investment; we want to create new and long-lasting partnerships amongst local business leaders which help the borough to prosper and improve opportunities for residents – especially our young people.

Any businesses wishing to register their interest in attending the Hive event on Thursday, October 8 can do so via the Hive website here http://bit.ly/1KcMeP5

Speaking about his retirement, Graham said: “I have had an amazing time at Pierce, making many great friends while providing some inspirational entrepreneurs with advice that has helped them to grow successful businesses of their own.

“Some of that advice included succession planning and I am pleased to say that Pierce has a team in place who will ensure it can go from strength to strength by continuing to deliver the high level of service for which Pierce is renowned.”

John Green says: “Graham’s clients have known the care and attention of a superb professional and will not be disappointed going forward as their needs will continue to be met by a team of people who share his values and commitment to quality.

“Practising what he preached about succession planning, Graham has been mindful of building a strong team to continue his good work once he retired.

“Many businesses in Lancashire and beyond have benefited from his experience and expertise and I am sure that they will join us in wishing him all the best for his retirement.

“With Graham’s help, Pierce remains a progressive and dynamic firm which has naturally and organically evolved into a forward thinking practice with ‘one stop shop’ facilities for its clients.

“With a strong backbone of long serving staff, an experienced Board of Directors and excellent preparation for the future, Pierce is very well placed to support the North West business community.”

What’s the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning about?

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support’s biggest charity fundraising event. They ask people across the UK – and sometimes further afield – to hold a coffee morning, where donations on the day are made to Macmillan. In 2013 154,000 people signed up to coffee morning, raising a record £20 million for charity.

How did it start?

The event started in 1990, when a local fundraising committee decided to hold a coffee morning where people came along to meet and mingle – as they might ordinarily do – but donate the cost of their coffee to Macmillan in the process.

Child at a coffee morning

The idea seemed such a simple, yet effective one that they suggested the model be taken up nationally. The first National World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was in 1991, when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Since then it has raised over £113 million in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Great North Run 2014

gnr_169326b909f

Earlier this year when it all seemed too far away to be real, I decided to run the Great North Run (half marathon) on Sunday 7th September – to motivate me towards this and to do something for a good cause, I am raising money for the RSPCA. More specifically for Greater Manchester Animal Hospital – a hospital run by the RSPCA that receives no government funding, yet treats more than 30,000 animals a year.

I am politely asking for donations towards this cause, and any money donated would be greatly appreciated.

There’s no sales pitch.  Superfast Lancashire is a jointly funded collaboration between Lancashire County Council, Blackburn with Darwen Council, Blackpool Council and BT, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

Superfast Lancashire’s first large scale Business Support event takes place on 4 October at Preston North End football stadium and has been tailored to help Lancashire’s businesses make the most of superfast broadband as we roll it out to 97% of the county.  By going along, local businesses can pick up hints, tips and practical advice on how to develop, grow or improve the effectiveness of their business, using the potential and power of superfast internet access.

The agenda includes different sessions, from master classes that experts are hosting, to a marketplace of other business support initiatives that can be of help to local businesses.  There will also be a forward looking view of how the small and medium sized business market place is set to develop in future years, as well a key note guest speaker to round the day off in style, inspiring you to take the benefits illustrated during the day back to your business.

Inspiring speakers, Dr Nicola Millard, Futurologist and Chris Boardman, MBE will also deliver plenary sessions on the day.

  • An opening session with Dr. Nicola Millard, Futurologist. What might be lying around the corner for customers and organisations?’
